Friday Film Fest
It's Friday! Happy Halloween! This video is pre-walking so it's not super great but I think it offers a pretty good insight into what my life is like with Calder.

A Taste of Adorable
Here's a taste of Calder in one of his Halloween costumes. He won't wear the feet or the head parts. So basically his costume is really expensive jammies with a tail. Calder also has another dragon/dino suit to wear to day care on the holiday itself. These are pretty much all of the pictures I got from the party, I spent the bulk of time there chasing Calder around and trying to stop him from gabbing fistfuls of mac & cheese from other people's plates. I am still waiting for that whole "stanger anxiety" thing to kick in.

Friday Film Fest
Hey! Lookee here! It's Friday Film Fest, back from the dead. Sweeeeeeet. Nothing special. Just a random unedited and poorly shot clip of a walkin' baby. Yup, that's right. Walkin'. Crawling is for wusses. Seriously, it was like a switch flipped in Calder and he came home from day care on Thursday and was like, "You know, I don't really care for this crawling crap any more. I'm gonna start chasing the dog around on foot from now on if you don't mind." This isn't the best example but it's hard to get Calder to perform when he gets home from school. He just wants to play and annoy Elby.

You Have GOT To Be Kidding Me
Now I think I have HFMD. My throat is killing me and I have one painful blister on my left ring finger. My immune system is supposed to be too strong for this shit. Jeebus.
Ten Months!
HOLY COW. Calder has officially been on the outside longer than he was on the inside. And yet I still don't feel like I caught up on all the beer drinking I missed out on while preggo. Huh. Maybe that's because I don't really have time to drink anymore. I don't have time to do much of anything, quite frankly because do you know what 10 month old baby boys like to do? Um, that would be everything. I am only getting to write this because after he refused to nap for more than 45 minutes at a time yesterday it has caught up to him and he has been done for almost 3 hours now. I also got to wash the dishes, clean the kitchen, change cat litter. In addition I am trying to eat some leftover chinese food for lunch before Calder wakes up and demands half of it. He already ate all the bananas out of my cereal this morning.
When he is awake it is pretty much a constant battle to prevent Calder from braining himself on the furniture. While he is wholly embracing his newfound mobility, he hasn't quite mastered it and frequently forgets that he isn't all that hot at standing or especially walking. It doesn't take much to trip him up on his brief jaunts so he bites it pretty often. His head has a lovely similarity to a topigraphical map. Day care probably thinks we beat him. Or are negligent.
Not that day care would have time to notice since he's barely been there the past two weeks. Last week we became aware that not only did Calder have an ear infection, he was also infected with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. The rash wasn't really noticeable until last Saturday after his OTHER rash had cleared up once and for all. Of course this meant we had to keep him out of day care for another few days since HFMD is wicked contagious and pretty much untreatable. Just a run it's course kind of ailment. On top of that, rash free Calder has developed a mean cold. Gross green boogers in his nose. And eyes. Darth Vader breathing. You know the deal. At the point I am considering packing him up and mailing him off to the CDC.
Calder = Patient X(host monkey + Typhoid Mary)
Aside from sick baby tending, I have been very busy preparing for Halloween. Calder and I will be dinosaurs. I am making my own costume but punked out and bought Calder one from ebay. It's a very nice costume but I think my laziness has been punsihed. Despite the outfit's size of 6-12 months, I will be luck if the dino suit still fits him in 2 weeks. The head piece already doesn't fatsen under his Orson jowels so I am gonna have to riggamajig something there. Or just let him be a human headed dinosaur. It's a newly discovered species, the Crankybabysaurus. As a back-up, I do have a pattern for a Size 2 dinosaur costume. My own outfit is progressing a lot faster thanI had anticipated so if I really hate myself, I can just swing by the fabric store and get a few more yards of the fleece I am using for my costume and hack out a new one for Calder. I am sure I will have another kid someday and I am sure that that kid will also be dressed as a dinosaur ever year until he or she is old enough to protest. So maybe having two kids' dino suits laying around isn't such a bad idea.

Yes, May I help You?
Why hello there. Is there something I can help you with? Oh, you want me to write something? Ur, I guess I could do that. It's not part of my normal duties and I am supposed to be mopping the kitchen right now but I guess I could assist you. JUST DON'T TELL MY MANAGER!
Yeah, so Calder is doing super. His rash is gone and the ear infection seems to be cleared up. He's a busy, busy guy which is why I haven't had time to do much writing here or videos or whatnot. All I seem to do these days is wake up, get baby ready, go to work, pick up baby, feed baby dinner, bathe baby, play with baby, put baby to bed, fall asleep on couch. When I am at home I have no time for cleaning or exercising or anything else that does not involve direct interaction with Calder. He is one demanding boy. He knows what he likes, he knows what he wants and goddammit, he's going to let you know.
What does he like these days? Well food is still right up there. Some of his tastes are pretty normal, cheese, Cheerios, dog food etc but some of his choices have definitely surprised us. A few nights ago I was busting up a head of cauliflower to steam for dinner (This is how I stay relatively think while not exercising. We eat a LOT of steamed vegetables.) and Calder went bazoo. This is despite the fact that Bruce was trying to feed him his regular dinner of vaguely vomitous but nutritious stuff in a jar. Since he wasn't really interested in his real dinner, I gave Calder a few raw florets of cauliflower to play with so he would stay entertained while I finsihed dinner and Bruce folded launder. Well let me tell you, Calder ate those pieces and then polished off several more. Then of course when we had finally settled down to eat our food, he ate a few more pieces of the cooked cauliflower. In other strange food news, he went to town on some beets a few weeks ago. The next day was like Calder and Technicolor Diaper Mess. That is still too disturbing for me to talk about.
Calder likes balls. All balls, any balls. Soccer balls, softballs, little plastic ones that go with his toys. Hell, he discovered his own junk the other day and can barely stop playing with those balls. The kid just like balls. It's sort of funny because you'd think that considering how sports obsessed Bruce and I are, we may have pushed this fascination on him but that's not true. We actually had nothing but the little plastic ones that came with his toys and one 16 inch softball in the house for the longest time. Calder started pushing the softball around the apartment, chasing it and throwing it and rolling it. He caught on to playing catch really quickly so we'd do that all the time. Well, while we were in Canada, Kaitlyn and Steffen had a lot of toys laying around all the time and Calder quickly adopted a beach ball as his own. Along with catch, Calder, with a little help from Gramma, started playing soccer in the living room. He must have kicked that beach ball all over Canada. Of course, when we got home we bought some other balls for him to play with since he liked the beach ball so much. Now he has two small soccer balls, a few squishy ones and even a small basketball sports center toy. He really enjoys that. He can and does just stand there dunking on the basket for large chunks of time.
That's right, standing. Since his ear infection has cleared up, Calder has renewed his interested in being upright. He stands all the time now. Calder and even get himself up and down. When he wants something from the floor while he's standing he either does squats to get it or does a quarterback-like tripod stance and then shoots right back up. I also finally got to see him take some steps. FINALLY. Heck, yesterday I was trying to get him to walk towards me and instead he decided he wanted to go play basketball and changed direction without hesitating or wobbling at all. I predict that by the end of the year, Calder will be unstoppable. And I will have even less time to get anything done.
I suppose I better mop that stupid floor now before he wakes up. Sigh.

Itchy Boy
The diagnosis is amoxicillin rash. So essentially, the cure made him even worse. At least the fever is gone. Although he didn't have a full blown allergic reaction, Dr. Merens still switched him to a different antibiotic. Calder will start taking that tomorrow so his rash has a little bit of time to fade. In the mean time, it's oatmeal baths and teeny tiny amounts of Benedryl. That means everyone in this house with the exception of the cats now takes Benedryl. Even Elby does.

Fever, Poops and Rashes, Oh My!
What a long week it's been here. On Monday, day care called because Calder had a slight fever. Since it was under 100 he could stay there but as soon as it went over, he would have to get picked up. Thankfully (?) it didn't hit 100 until later that night at home, 103 in fact. A few doses of Motrin and Tylenol later, we determined that Calder had to stay home on Tuesday because his temperature was still over 100 with out the meds. Bruce and I briefly considered calling the doctor but Calder was still eating, was still wetting his diapers and anyways, he had a check-up scheduled for Thursday. It seemed like such a waste.
Wednesday, Calder's fever seemed to be in check so we sent him back to day care even though Bruce was staying at home that day since HE was sick. Calder made it to all of 1:30 before Bruce had to go pick him because he had a fever again. This time there was also some bonus diarrhea. Yippee. That prompted me to call the doctor's and of course the nurse told us not to bother bringing him in as long as he was eating and wetting; we just had to make sure that Calder stayed well hydrated. A ton more Motrin, Tylenol and water later Calder was FINALLY going to see the doctor Thursday morning.
So yay! Dr. Merens! What a nice lady. I pretty much have no idea what she said since I didn't go to the appointment and Bruce is still very sick and still very useless. What I did manage to find out is that Calder has an ear infection on the right side (I could swore it was gonna be on the left).SO he's back on that nasty pink stuff that needs to be administered with a liquid syringe for maximum mess dispersion. In terms of growing baby developmental thingy dingers, all I got out of Brice is that Calder is 21 lbs and can start drinking milk. How tall he is and what kind of milk were not included in this information exchange. I tried to figure the first part out myself but using the super scientific method of standing Calder next to the wall, eye balling a mark and then using the tape measure to see how high up the wall the mark is. I got 28 inches that way. Or 5'7". It was hard to tell. I figured out the second part using Google and am going to go with whole milk until someone tells me otherwise.
Not that we have tried giving him milk yet, mind you. Calder went to day care for only his second full day of the week today and promptly developed a mystery rash on his head, face, chest, back and bum. So, uh, no new foods until that bumpy mess gets pinned down and cleared. Dr. Merens will be in the office on Saturday if the rash gets any worse but now I am starting to wonder if we should bother since we have another appointment for him in two weeks anyways...
Just kidding. Because now I am sick too and I don't think I could handle a baby with a mystery illness on top of a known one.
Perhaps once the ear infection gets cleared up, Calder will get his balance back and will go back to start practicing his walking again. Of course I should be dead of my own sinus infection by then but it'll still be nice for the people that are left.
