First off, my sweet, sassy, ballsy baby girl is one year old now and I just die about it every day. The teeny, mewling lump that would eat and sleep, eat and sleep, fuss a bit and then eat and sleep is now a climbing, rough housing, shrieky little toddler person. Wren knows what she wants (food) and she will not hesitate to let you know about it. Despite the fact that we had Calder weaned off bottles and pacifiers within weeks of turning one, it looks like Wren will not be giving them up any time soon. Although she only gets a paci at nap and bedtimes, woe betide the mom that tries to put her down with out one. We've placed a bowl of them just out of Wren's reach so it is easy to find an extra in the middle of the night and she knows they are there. She will cruise the shelf, pausing to stretch up onto her tippy toes and flail her hand around to see if she can touch the bowl that is just out of sight but that she knows is there.
Ech, and the bottles. Girl likes sippy cups just fine but sippy cups are apparently only for juice and water. Milk poured into a sippy is rejected after only a handful of swigs. Even the precious little breast milk I have left. Speaking of, that's never going away either. Wren's new jam is letting me know she wants to nurse by wrestling one of the Boppy pillows over to me, climbing into my lap and screaming in my face. It's nice to have that special bonding time between the two of us. Though technically, since she's "asking for it" I should probably stop so I don't offend a bunch of people who like their knickers all good and wadded up. Snerk.
Wren's last doctor visit went pretty well, I think? She's 31 inches, 21 lbs 10 oz and has a head circumference of 45 cm. That's 90-95th, 50-75th and 25-50th percentiles respectively. She's long, lean with a wee bitty noggin. Although the nurse that called with her lead and CBC test results said everything was fine, she did suggest to Bruce that we "feed her more red meat". What now? Is that a subtle way of saying that my daughter is borderline anemic but not actually coming out and saying it because you don't want me to freak out? Yeah, freaking out is kind of my thing, lady. It's how I do. So whatever, red meat. Too bad that's pretty much the only food she will not eat consistently. Spinach smoothies for everyone I guess.
Likes: Food, shrieking for no reason, Calder, her ever-growing plush army, running around the back yard, wagon rides, the garbage, her pets and pointing at things.
Dislikes: Food being eaten by other people, being dressed, hats, hair in her face, wearing hair clips or standing still to get her little whale spout pony tail, being told to not jump on the dog and people leaving the room without her.
Mastered Skills (most kids can do):
Imitates others' activities - Watching Wren imitate her brother's karate moves is quite possibly the cutest thing I have ever seen. Of course there is no video of this because as soon as I take out the camera she's all jazz hands up in my grill. I have approximately one million pictures of the palm of her hand.Indicates wants with gestures - I'd say the whole Boppy thing is a pretty clear gesture.
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do):
Takes a few steps - Why do you even bother Babycenter?Says one word besides "mama" or "dada" - Dit-Dee = Kitty, Daht = That, as in pointing at everything in the room out of her reach and going "Daht. Daht. Daht. Daht." I think it roughly translated to "Please fetch me that item there, I'd like to break it."
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do):
Walks alone - Stop wasting my time, Babycenter.
Scribbles with a crayon - She does. Wren still likes to eat her writing implements more than use them for their intended purposes but she does scribble occasionally.
Says two words besides "mama" or "dada" - See above but anything else is kind of eh. She could be saying dagdag for Chief and maaaaybe boomboom for boobs and poooosibly bahbah for Calder/brother but I could also be making that up.
